“Close Tallulah Now” Kickback Movie Night and Panel Discussion
October 26, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm CDT
FFLIC, along with youth counterparts Black Girls Rising and Black Man Rising will host a youth-centered movie night and panel discussion about “Close Tallulah Now,” a documentary film that captured parents’ fight to close one of the most notorious youth prisons in the nation two decades ago. The panel will include those impacted by Tallulah and who fought for its closure, including Ms. Connie Lewis, Ms. Avis Brock, and Attorney David Utter, as well as special guest Mr. Kevin “2 Cent” Griffin – Clark.
FFLIC was founded in 2001 by a group of parents who were concerned about the abuses and violence in the youth prisons and in 2003, FFLIC had its first major success. The Juvenile Justice Reform Act (Act 1225) was passed to overhaul the youth incarceration system and close the Tallulah Correctional Center for Youth.
In the years following, youth, parents, and advocates have participated in numerous events, strategies, and tactics to change the injustices happening in youth prisons. But the promises of Act 1225, which was to transform the justice system into a model of care and support for children, never happened.
Join youth, FFLIC members, and youth justice advocates for a viewing of the short film and discussion! Food, music, and kickback vibes are included.
